Minister Confirms MoD Investigating Security Risk from Vehicles from China, as Personnel Told to Avoid Secret Talk in Vehicles.

A defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively examining the possible security risks posed by Chinese vehicles, and staff have been advised to refrain from discussing classified information in all vehicles.

Safety Advice for Defence Staff

During a recent appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed reports that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to discuss classified material while travelling in Chinese vehicles.

The minister stated that the ministry is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but emphasised that safety is a issue in all contemporary vehicles.

Our department has a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
However whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting MoD devices into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a secret classification in any vehicle, because of the increasing risks of surveillance that are present in all automobile, to only have those secret talks in secure locations. This is a prudent and sensible thing for anyone worried about security.

After it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Wider Security Background

This announcement follows reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the UK to the existence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese buses, which could allow China to switch off buses and cause disruption to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russia spy ship was reportedly directing laser beams at RAF aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.

This wider security environment highlights the importance of strong protocols and vigilance in all areas of government activities, including vehicle usage to communication practices.
